“Life Safely in Australia” – A Bridge of Knowledge and Local Law for Vietnamese Students in Melbourne

Over the past weekend, at Sunshine College in Melbourne, the knowledge-sharing event “Life Safely in Australia” was held with resounding success. The program, focused on safety and legal awareness in Australia, drew strong attention not only from Melbourne’s local authorities but also from distinguished guests, including representatives from the Embassy of Vietnam in Australia, Brimbank City Police – Victoria, legal experts, and Vietnamese business leaders in Melbourne.

Vietnamese students from grades 10, 11, and 12 at Sunshine College, Melbourne, together with the VASIA organizing committee.

The event was co-organized by the Vietnam-Australia Startup & Innovation Association (VASIA) and the leadership of Sunshine College – a school with a significant number of Vietnamese international students. Its goal was to equip students with essential knowledge of their rights, legal responsibilities, and available support systems while living, studying, and working in Australia.

Notably, behind the scenes, many young VASIA volunteers contributed silently yet meaningfully to ensure the event was well-prepared, engaging, and approachable for all.

Throughout the nearly 3-hour session, students had the opportunity to directly engage with experts on several critical topics, including:

  • Citizen protection policies for Vietnamese nationals and key considerations for those living, studying, and working in Australia.

  • Direct dialogue with Brimbank police officers on personal safety, handling dangerous situations, and how to use emergency or non-emergency police hotlines.

  • Support channels for urgent legal or consular issues, such as dealing with workplace exploitation and labor rights for international students.

Lawyer Marianne Phan, Director of Phan Campbell & Associates, shared insights on workplace rights for foreign nationals, housing and rental laws, and legal preparedness in the face of unexpected incidents.
Beyond the educational content, the program also fostered community spirit through light-hearted mini-games and gift giveaways from An Nam Market, featuring unique Vietnamese-imported products currently distributed in Australia.

On behalf of the organizing committee, Anthony Khoa – President of VASIA – extended heartfelt thanks to the esteemed guests, partners, and students whose active participation made this event not only informative but also truly inspiring.

“We hope the fundamental legal knowledge, rights awareness, and safety information shared today will serve as a strong foundation for your journey ahead – one of growth, entrepreneurship, and a positive life in Australia,” Anthony said in closing.
